about

Inspired by fantasy, graphics novels, and video games, Destiny: Eondwyr is an exciting sonic journey for the listener and performer alike. First commissioned by Dr. Kurt Gartner for Malletkat, Ableton Live, and Multimedia.

PERFORMANCE NOTES
Destiny: Eondwyr is a unique work in that its performance is based on video gameplay. Destiny: Eondwyr does not need to be played from beginning to end but instead the performer chooses which movements and sections to perform in whatever order to better express themselves musically.
Each individual section has been written with this in mind. Instead of one massive sequential work, this piece may be a considered a series of miniatures (sections) linked together to tell a musical tale. Destiny: Eondwyr in its original state includes a narrative told through images that are shown throughout the piece, with specific musical elements corresponding to each image. The end hope is that the work tells both a visual and musical tale that envelops the audience much like a film or modern video game.
Performers wishing to use this only as a musical work instead of a full narration w/multimedia may choose to perform in this order (or a variation thereof) or may choose to perform a single movement, or only sections from each movement:
Introduction I. Three Doors II. Nerisonna III. Volfe
IV. Auroras
V. Morloke
The initial performance of Destiny: Eondwyr will consist of a Malletkat with an extended octave, two pedals, and use of Ableton Live for additional audio and effects. This configuration is not necessary for each performance. However, performers wishing to use the additional audio files and/or multimedia will need to find a configuration that works best for live performance and/or online performance.
Live Performance Considerations
For smoother musical transitions using programs like Ableton, it is suggested that a crossfade be used between sections that do not have definite breaks allowing overlap between sections. For example, at the end of the Introduction Section 1, the BD audio file for Section 2 may begin before the CHOIR AUDIO from Section 1 finishes, making for a good transition. There are a variety of effects and looping functions in Ableton and similar programs that will allow for a more musical experience through experimentation and improvisation.
MIDI and AUDIO Stems
Stems are provided for each movement and each section. These individual stems contain both MIDI and AUDIO data that can be incorporated into the work for live
performance, online performance, etc. Be sure to look over the README file for a list of files and more detailed instructions. The cues in the score line up to the stems, which are labeled according to Movement and Section.
Optional Additional Musicians
While the work is written for Malletkat soloist, some sections may benefit from the improvisation of additional musicians. These musicians can play onstage or be embedded backstage or in the audience for added dramatic effect. The music itself has a simplicity that allows for easy improvisation for the experienced musician, especially in regards to percussion. Any additional staging, actors, costuming, makeup, etc. is greatly encouraged.
Multimedia
This work may be performed with multimedia. The performer can choose to use the Malletkat to trigger the original Destiny: Eondwyr panels manually or may choose to use third party software to sync images with the music. The Images are included in the score packet. Please look over the README file for a list of files.
The number of images used for each performance is entirely up to the musician, who may choose to illustrate every musical section with several panels or may choose only a handful of images for the entire piece. Performers using the Multimedia component consisting of original comic book panels should read over the section “The Story of Eondwyr” for a more detailed explanation for each panel. Ideally the panels would be projected, but alternate venues may include printed versions of the panels, use of flatscreens, printer materials, online spaces, sending the images live to audience member smartphones, projecting the image onto the performer, using of a static image, or other choices of visual presentation. The goal is to conform the piece to each venue and for every performer so that those with great resources and limited resources alike can share this work with the audience.
INTRODUCTION (Optional)
Title Screen
The performer may choose to use this as a transition work, introduction with Title screen, or even as an “outro” after the final movement. A live drumset player may accompany, and the work can be vamped/improvised as needed.
I. THE THREE DOORS
Narrator Shares the Tale of Eondwyr, Performer Chooses their Hero and Quest
The performer may choose to play the Narrator audio over a light underscore. This section then moves to the choice of player and the decision of which quest (door) to select for the following movement. Each Section may be repeated in a vamp as the performer sees fit. Improvisation on the motifs, selection of audio, and patches are encouraged.
II. NERISONNA
Water Quest and the Search for the Orb of Beauty
This ethereal underwater work involves the search for the Orb of Beauty from the Queen of the Nymphs Nerisonna. The music undulates like waves and may be improvised and repeated as needed. The Hero finds the Queen in an underwater grotto and receives the Orb.
III. Volfe
Beast Quest and the Rhythm of Life Orb
The Hero meets with Volfe, Mage of the Beasts. They are attacked by the lizard people Sauraki. Volfe battles bravely and loses. The Hero, saddened by the loss of the great Mage, takes the Orb. This is a lively movement.
IV. Auroras
Space Quest and the Search for Celestial Harmony Orb
Journeying through space, the Hero enters the great hall of Auroras and is blessed by the Celestial Harmony of the Star Choir. The beauty of their music releases magic that the Hero can use to defeat Morloke. Some experimentation using chorusing, echos, patches, etc. is encouraged to create a beautiful ambient experience. This is a slow, lengthy work, and thought can be given regarding length and combining this work with other movements to make a musically satisfying performance.
V. Morloke
Rescue of the Child of Light and Battle with End Boss Morloke in the Underworld
The Hero journeys to the Underworld and battles the evil Morloke and his minions to release the Child of Light.
