ACT 3 SCENE 1 The underground

With the USSA MP's picking up fresh bodies for Apothetae Wards I and II, a new society of misfits and the forgotten has found peace and relative solitude in the havens of The Underground. Once the former subway system, long ago abandoned during the first Euro-Arab War over half a century before, this system of dilapitaded tunnels serves as a home for orphans, wounded veterans, the sick, the old, and the lost.

The Quad is a central square within THE UNDERGROUND that gives a full view of the different operations of THE UNDERGROUND. There are several rooms, each set up in different nooks, crannies, and tunnels. They have been fully renovated, and though dark, are fully functional. In one room a dozen or so children are learning their lessons in war and politics, taught by Gabe. The Infirmary can be seen from this vantage point. And in the far off distance, the Vyper Militia trains.

A final room, a meeting room covered in holoscreens, old nanoters (nano computers), and other antiquated tech, has a massive map of the USSA and the surrounding territories. Territories include the Miami Territories, where The Factory is, Nuevo Tejas directly to the West, right above North Mexico. The United Northwest States of America and the Angeles Desert also make up part of the map. "Dead Zone" marks the former Washington D.C. area and the surrounding states while Alaska is now "The Republic of Alaska". A wall is enacted along the northernmost edges of the former USA to keep out the riff raff from crossing into the Canadian nation. The new capital of the USSA is Nueva York. Both Mexico and Canada are superpowers in the post-nuclear and post-Euro-Arab Wars world. The decimated USA remains an annoying group of destroyed territories and criminals. The Factory is marked cleary on the map.

Segue into Pillars of the Underground.

WIDE: the underground academy.

Children learn from GABE and robotex (robotic teacher assistants). Each child wears a similar uniform and seems to be repeating a mantra.

UNDERGROUND CHILDREN

(In a steady monotone) 1 plus 1 is 2. 2 plus 2 is 5. 3 plus 3 equals 6. Know this and you're blind.

GABE

Government governing the least is best.

UNDERGROUND CHILDREN

Keep your mouth open, citizen. 2 plus 2 is 5.

GABE

(Almost with a pastor's growing fervor) The rich war. The poor die. A life based on being!

UNDERGROUND CHILDREN

A life based on being!

GABE

A life based on doing!

UNDERGROUND CHILDREN

A life based on doing!

ALL

Power beyond our will! Faith not fear. Hope not hate. Lay the foundation for regeneration!

GABE

(Break from the propaganda-like mantras, as he explains) The purest religion, to care for the widow, to feed the orphan (looks at LIBERTARIA). (Continues with earlier mantras).

CUTAWAY: LIBERTARIA's face, eyebrow raises in suprise.

The Mantra begins again.

CUTAWAY: VYPER MILITia practices.

Throughout, the UNDERGROUND CHILDREN and GABE continue their mantras, intermingled with the VYPER MILITIA's own words which echo that of the children but in a more march-like way. MIGUEL leads them in their mantras as they practice formations.

MIGUEL

Power beyond our will!

VYPER MILITIA

Power!

MIGUEL

Faith not fear!

VYPER MILITIA

Fear!

MIGUEL

Hope not hate!

VYPER MILITIA

Hate!

ALL

Regenerate!

All of the text begins to meld together. SIMEON listens with a megalomaniac's pride. LUCINDE breaks away from the display, and starts to wander, sarcastically singing under her breath (to the METAL INK tune).

LUCINDE

Follow dear old Simeon, that is what they're thinking. Half man, half God, half who knows what? That's what they're thinking. To stay alive, no to survive, oozing artificial kindness filling up my empty soul. Fallen. Depressed.

Soon the UNDERGROUND CHILDREN and VYPER MILITIA are singing in a large parallel chorus, with GABE and MIGUEL soloing over the choir in a sort of vocal duel.

GABE

The purest religion!

MIGUEL

Power beyond our will!

GABE

Faith not fear. Hope not hate!

MIGUEL

Power, fear, hate.
